The double boiler method

The double boiler method

The double boiler method is a technique used in candle making to melt wax safely and prevent it from coming into direct contact with a heat source, such as an open flame or direct heat. It involves using two nested containers, one holding the wax and the other holding water, to create a gentle and indirect heat source for melting the wax.

Here's how to use the double boiler method in candle making:

1. Select Containers: Choose two heat-resistant containers that are suitable for the double boiler setup. The inner container should be smaller and able to hold the wax, while the outer container should be larger and hold enough water to provide a buffer between the heat source and the wax.

2. Fill the Outer Container: Place the larger container on a heat-resistant surface. Fill it with water, making sure not to overfill. The water level should be below the rim of the inner container to prevent any water from entering the wax.

3. Set Up the Double Boiler: Place the inner container (containing the wax) into the larger container with water. Make sure the water level in the outer container is higher than the level of the wax in the inner container.

4. Heat the Water: Begin heating the water on a stove or other heat source. Gradually increase the heat to bring the water to a gentle simmer. Avoid boiling the water vigorously, as it can cause splashing and the possibility of water getting into the wax.

5. Melt the Wax: As the water simmers, the indirect heat will melt the wax in the inner container. Stir the wax occasionally with a heat-resistant utensil to ensure even melting. Continue heating until the wax is completely melted and reaches the desired temperature for your specific wax type.

6. Maintain Temperature: Once the wax is melted, you can adjust the heat source to maintain a steady temperature, depending on the requirements of your specific wax. Be cautious not to exceed the recommended temperature range, as overheating can affect the quality and characteristics of the wax.

7. Carefully Remove the Containers: Once you are done melting the wax, turn off the heat source and carefully remove the inner container from the double boiler setup. Use oven mitts or heat-resistant gloves to protect your hands from hot surfaces.

The double boiler method provides a gentle and controlled heat source for melting wax, reducing the risk of overheating or direct exposure to flame. It's an effective technique to melt wax safely, especially when working with heat-sensitive waxes like soy wax or beeswax.

Remember to exercise caution throughout the process, and never leave the double boiler unattended while the heat source is on.
